On August 2017, Intel has launched their 8th generation Intel Core Kaby Lake-R series. There are four processors with 15 W TDP which will run a slower base clock rates. They also utilize the integrated graphics card, Intel UHD Graphics 620. This GPU is identical to the previous, Intel HD Graphics 620. With four cores and eight threads, these Kaby Lake-R series processors promise significant 40% performance boost with no sacrificing of battery life.The first four of the Intel Core Kaby Lake-R quad-core processors are i5-8250U, i5-8350U, i7-8550U, and i7-8650U. They replace the Kaby Lake dual-core i5-7200U, i5-7300U, i7-7500U, and i7-7600U which is much used for best rated notebook in the market today. By doubling the number of cores and further improving, Intel says that the Kaby Lake-R series will boost the performance 40% over the prior Kaby Lake.
As said above, Intel has decreased the base clock rate of the Intel Core Kaby Lake-R series processor. This means to remain them within the 15 W TDP envelope. However, not only decreased but significantly decreased. And indeed, the new processors run slower than the equivalent previous ones. For example, the i5-8250U runs at just 1.60 GHz, slower than the equivalent i5-7200U that runs at 2.50 GHz. While the i7-8650U runs at 1.90 GHz and its equivalent i7-7600U runs at 2.80 GHz. As compensations, Intel also promises that the R-series will have faster Turbo Boost clock rates compared to the equivalent. The R-series processors also come with integrated graphics cards, Intel UHD Graphics 620. This GPU is identical with the Intel HD Graphics 620 which is integrated to the previous Kaby Lake processors. So it is only renaming the GPU.
